The company operates through two primary business segments: Retail Banking and Commercial Banking, with all other activities including Treasury reported in Corporate/Other. The Retail Banking segment provides consumer deposit products, residential real estate lending, indirect auto financing, consumer loans, credit cards, and wealth management services to individuals and small businesses. The Commercial Banking segment delivers comprehensive services to middle-market and large Hawaii-based businesses, including commercial and industrial lending, auto dealer flooring, commercial real estate lending, and construction financing.

First Hawaiian employs over 2,000 full-time, part-time, and temporary employees with an average tenure of 11.7 years. The company offers a diversified range of banking services including deposit products, lending services, wealth management and trust services, consumer and commercial credit cards, and merchant processing. Its wealth management business provides trust services, private banking, and investment management through its subsidiary, Bishop Street Capital Management Corporation, a registered investment adviser with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company's business model emphasizes developing comprehensive, long-term banking relationships through cross-selling products and services while delivering high-quality customer service. Prior to its August 2016 initial public offering on the NASDAQ Global Select Market, First Hawaiian was an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas, which fully exited its ownership position in February 2019. The company is subject to extensive federal and state banking regulation and operates as a financial holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act.
