The company operates through four reportable segments: Annuities, Life, Run-off, and Corporate & Other. The Annuities segment represents the largest business division and consists of variable annuities, fixed annuities, index-linked annuities, and income annuities designed to address contract holders' needs for protected wealth accumulation, wealth transfer, and income security. The segment's flagship product line is the Shield Annuity suite, which combines features of both variable and fixed annuities while providing market participation with downside protection. The Life segment offers term, universal, whole, and variable life insurance products designed to provide financial security and protected wealth transfer. The Run-off segment manages products no longer actively sold, including universal life with secondary guarantees, structured settlements, and pension risk transfer contracts. The Corporate & Other segment includes funding agreements and excess capital management.

As of December 31, 2025, Brighthouse Financial managed total assets under management of approximately $206.2 billion, consisting of $120.6 billion in general account investments and $85.5 billion in separate account assets. The Annuities segment held $152.7 billion in assets under management, while the Life segment held $15.8 billion. The company was separated from MetLife, Inc. on August 4, 2017, establishing itself as an independent, publicly-traded company focused on disciplined risk management and sustainable long-term shareholder value creation through its targeted product offerings and independent distribution strategy.
