The company was incorporated in 1983 through the consolidation of Pittsburgh National Corporation and Provident National Corporation. In January 2026, PNC completed its acquisition of FirstBank Holding Company and its banking subsidiary FirstBank, which had $26.4 billion in assets at the time of close, further expanding PNC's market presence and customer base.

PNC operates as a bank holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act and has elected to be a financial holding company under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, enabling it to engage in a broader range of financial activities. The 10 largest by fund-held value, of 41.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
