The business

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a global automotive manufacturer headquartered in the United States with a website at https://www.gm.com. The company designs, builds, and sells trucks, crossovers, cars, and automobile parts while providing software-enabled services and subscriptions worldwide.

GM operates through two primary automotive segments: GM North America (GMNA) and GM International (GMI), which together generated approximately 3.8 billion wholesale vehicles in the most recent fiscal year. The company markets vehicles under four primary brands—Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC—with additional brands including Baojun, Wuling, and others sold through equity ownership stakes in joint ventures, particularly in China. GMNA accounted for 86.8 percent of wholesale volume while GMI represented 13.2 percent. The company also operates GM Financial, a captive automotive finance subsidiary providing retail and commercial lending across North America, South America, and China through joint ventures.

GM maintains a substantial manufacturing footprint with 50 U.S. plants and parts facilities across 19 states, including 11 vehicle assembly plants. As of December 31, 2025, the company employed approximately 155,000 people worldwide, comprising roughly 56 percent hourly and 44 percent salaried workers, with substantially all U.S. hourly employees represented by unions.

The company's product portfolio spans internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles, and advanced driver assistance systems. Notable EV offerings include the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac LYRIQ, and GMC Sierra EV. GM's software-enabled services include OnStar, available in over 20 markets globally, and Super Cruise, a hands-free driver assistance technology operating on more than 600,000 compatible road miles across the U.S. and Canada. The company recently refocused its autonomous vehicle strategy from robotaxi development to personal vehicle automation following the acquisition of noncontrolling interests in Cruise in February 2025.

GM's competitive position reflects strong market share in North America at 16.3 percent, with global market share of 6.8 percent across all markets served. Research and development expenses totaled $8.5 billion in the most recent fiscal year, supporting ongoing innovation in vehicle technology, electrification, and autonomous capabilities.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
