The business

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE: HII) is a global all-domain defense partner headquartered in Newport News, Virginia, with operations spanning shipbuilding and advanced technology solutions. The company maintains its website at hii.com and serves as America's largest naval shipbuilder, employing approximately 44,000 people domestically and internationally.

The company operates through three primary segments. Ingalls Shipbuilding, located in Pascagoula, Mississippi, designs and constructs non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, including amphibious assault ships, surface combatants, and national security cutters. Newport News Shipbuilding, situated on approximately 550 acres near the James River in Virginia, specializes in designing and constructing nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, as well as refueling and overhauling nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The Mission Technologies segment develops integrated technology solutions across four groups: All-Domain Operations, Warfare Systems, Global Security, and Unmanned Systems, providing command and control systems, cybersecurity capabilities, artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, training solutions, and unmanned systems for defense and commercial applications.

Approximately 81 percent of revenues are generated from the U.S. Navy, with the remainder derived from the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and other federal agencies. The company has delivered more ships in more ship classes than any other U.S. naval shipbuilder, including all ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers currently in active service and the first Gerald R. Ford-class carrier.

The workforce includes approximately 7,000 engineers and designers, 3,600 employees with advanced degrees, and more than 6,900 veterans. The company operates two nationally renowned apprentice schools that have graduated over 15,500 individuals since their inception. Approximately 45 percent of employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements. The company has not experienced a work stoppage in more than 26 years at Newport News and more than 18 years at Ingalls, reflecting stable labor relations and workforce continuity.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
