3M was incorporated in 1929 under Delaware law to continue operations begun in 1902. The company recently completed the separation of its Health Care business through the creation of Solventum, which represents a significant portfolio management action reshaping the company's strategic focus. The company maintains substantial research and development capabilities that generate a steady stream of patented inventions and trade secrets, providing competitive advantages particularly in new product introductions.
