The business

Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE: ITW) operates as a global manufacturer of diversified industrial products and equipment serving niche markets across 49 countries. The company maintains its headquarters and corporate operations at www.itw.com, where investors can access financial filings and company information.

ITW employs approximately 43,000 people globally, with roughly 16,000 based in the United States and the remainder distributed across multiple international locations. The company operates approximately 410 plants and office facilities worldwide, with approximately 270 located outside the United States, primarily in China, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Over 50 percent of net sales are derived from customers outside the United States.

The company's operations are organized into seven reportable segments: Automotive OEM, Food Equipment, Test & Measurement and Electronics, Welding, Polymers & Fluids, Construction Products, and Specialty Products. These segments comprise 88 divisions that serve diverse end markets including automotive manufacturing, food service and retail, electronics production, general industrial fabrication, construction, and consumer durables.

ITW's core competitive advantage derives from its proprietary ITW Business Model, which comprises three elements: the 80/20 Front-to-Back process for operational optimization, customer-back innovation focused on solving critical customer pain points, and a decentralized entrepreneurial culture enabling rapid market responsiveness. The company maintains significant intellectual property protection with approximately 4,200 unexpired U.S. patents and 10,400 unexpired foreign patents, plus approximately 7,200 pending applications globally.

Major brands owned or operated by ITW include Miller in welding, Hobart in food equipment, Instron and MTS in test and measurement, Paslode in construction products, Rain-X and Permatex in polymers and fluids, and Hi-Cone in specialty products. The company distributes products primarily through direct sales to industrial manufacturers and independent distributors.

Founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1915, ITW has executed a comprehensive enterprise strategy since 2012 focused on portfolio discipline, business structure simplification, and strategic sourcing. Recent acquisitions in the Test and Measurement and Electronics segment and the divestiture of a Specialty Products business reflect the company's ongoing portfolio refinement efforts to maintain focus on sustainable differentiation and above-market organic growth.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
