The business

CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CNP) operates as a public utility holding company providing essential energy services across multiple states through its subsidiaries. The company maintains its corporate presence at www.centerpointenergy.com and serves millions of customers through regulated electric transmission, distribution, and natural gas operations.

The company's business is organized into three primary reportable segments: Electric, Natural Gas, and Corporate and Other. The Electric segment comprises Houston Electric, which provides transmission and distribution services in Texas, and Indiana Electric, which delivers integrated electric services in southwestern Indiana. Houston Electric operates as a transmission and distribution utility serving the Texas Gulf Coast region including Houston, delivering electricity on behalf of retail electric providers to approximately 2.9 million metered customers. Indiana Electric, operated through Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Company (SIGECO), serves approximately 154,000 electric customers while also maintaining generation assets and participating in wholesale power markets.

The Natural Gas segment operates distribution systems across four states: Texas, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio, collectively serving approximately 4 million customers. This segment engages in regulated intrastate natural gas sales, transportation, and storage services for residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation customers. The company provides permanent pipeline connections through interconnects with various interstate and intrastate pipeline companies.

CenterPoint Energy has undergone significant portfolio evolution, including the June 2022 acquisition of Indiana Gas and Ohio operations from Vectren, and the March 2025 sale of Louisiana and Mississippi natural gas operations. In October 2025, the company entered into an agreement to sell its Ohio operations to National Fuel Gas Company for approximately $2.62 billion, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The company operates within heavily regulated utility markets, with revenues derived primarily from rate structures approved by state regulatory commissions. CenterPoint Energy's operations demonstrate seasonal patterns, with natural gas demand concentrated in heating months and electric demand varying with cooling and heating needs across its service territories. The company maintains securitization structures through special purpose entities to finance infrastructure investments and system restoration projects.
