The business

GATX Corporation (NYSE: GTX) is a leading global railcar lessor and aircraft spare engine leasing company founded in 1898. The company operates through three primary business segments: Rail North America, Rail International, and Engine Leasing, with financial results from its tank container leasing business reported in the Other segment. GATX maintains its corporate website at www.gatx.com.

The company owns one of the largest railcar lease fleets in the world, comprising approximately 156,000 railcars as of December 31, 2025. Rail North America operates roughly 107,600 railcars and 627 locomotives across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, serving approximately 800 customers primarily in the transportation, chemical, petroleum, and food/agriculture industries. The fleet includes tank cars, freight cars, specialty covered hoppers, open-top cars, boxcars, and flatcars that transport over 580 different commodities. Rail International operates approximately 48,600 railcars across Europe and India, with GATX Rail Europe serving roughly 300 customers and Rail India serving 20 customers. The company maintains an extensive maintenance network including six major facilities in North America and a significant facility in Poland.

Through its Engine Leasing segment, GATX owns one of the largest aircraft spare engine lease portfolios globally. The business comprises 50 percent-owned joint ventures with Rolls-Royce plc, collectively owning 456 engines, and GATX Engine Leasing, a wholly owned entity managing 46 aircraft spare engines. The Other segment includes Trifleet, which owns and manages tank containers leased to approximately 300 customers in chemical, industrial gas, energy, and pharmaceutical industries.

As of December 31, 2025, GATX employed 2,371 persons globally, with approximately 39 percent represented by unions. The company reported total assets of 18.0 billion dollars. In January 2026, GATX completed a significant acquisition of approximately 101,000 railcars from Wells Fargo through a newly formed joint venture with Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, establishing GATX's initial 30 percent ownership stake with options to increase to 100 percent over time.
