The business

Synchrony Financial (NYSE: SYF) is a premier consumer financial services company that delivers digitally-enabled credit products and payment solutions to consumers through established relationships with national and regional retailers, manufacturers, healthcare providers, and digital partners. The company operates through a single business segment organized around five sales platforms: Home & Auto, Digital, Diversified & Value, Health & Wellness, and Lifestyle, each serving distinct partner ecosystems and consumer needs.

The company's core business involves originating and managing consumer credit through private label credit cards, dual cards, co-branded general purpose credit cards, and installment loans. Synchrony finances consumer purchases across diverse industries including retail, healthcare, home improvement, automotive, digital commerce, and specialty retail. During 2025, the company financed $182.3 billion in purchase volume and maintained $103.8 billion in loan receivables with 70.7 million active accounts. The company's five largest programs—Amazon, Lowe's, PayPal (including Venmo), Sam's Club, and TJX Companies—collectively accounted for 54 percent of total interest and fees on loans.

Synchrony operates primarily through Synchrony Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary that issues credit products and accepts FDIC-insured deposits. At December 31, 2025, the company held $81.1 billion in deposits representing 84 percent of total funding sources. The company's deposit base provides stable, low-cost funding for credit activities.

The company's competitive advantages include deep industry expertise, longstanding partner relationships spanning decades, innovative digital capabilities enabling omnichannel experiences, and proprietary data analytics from nearly 70 million customers. Approximately 60 percent of consumer revolving credit applications in 2025 were processed through digital channels. The company operates customer service centers across eight domestic and three international geographic hubs and maintains partnerships with leading technology providers for card production, statement delivery, and payment processing.

Synchrony's business model aligns interests with partners through merchant discounts on promotional financing, retailer share arrangements based on program performance, and marketing support. The company also generates revenue through interchange fees on dual cards and general purpose co-branded cards used outside partner networks, as well as customer fees and loyalty program operations.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
