The company designs, manufactures, installs and services a comprehensive portfolio of building technology products and solutions including commercial HVAC equipment, industrial refrigeration systems, integrated electronic security systems, fire detection and suppression systems, building controls and management systems, and digital software platforms. Johnson Controls serves commercial, industrial, data center, institutional and governmental customers across diverse end markets. The company employs approximately 87,000 people globally, with roughly 31,000 in the United States and 56,000 internationally.

Following portfolio optimization actions completed in fiscal 2025, Johnson Controls operates through three regional reporting segments: Americas, EMEA and APAC. Products and systems account for approximately 68 percent of sales from continuing operations while services represent 32 percent. The company maintains a substantial installed base and operates through an extensive direct sales and service network supplemented by global third-party distribution channels.

Johnson Controls' trusted building brands include YORK, Metasys, Ansul, Frick, FM:Systems, PENN, Sabroe, Silent-Aire, Simplex and Grinnell. The company has developed the OpenBlue digital software platform, which combines building expertise with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities to deliver data-driven solutions for remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance, workplace management and compliance monitoring.

The company traces its origins to 1885 when it was incorporated in Wisconsin as Johnson Electric Service Company to manufacture automatic temperature regulation systems. In 2005, Johnson Controls acquired York International, expanding its HVAC and refrigeration portfolio. The transformative 2016 merger with Tyco International combined Johnson Controls' building efficiency solutions with Tyco's fire and security capabilities, creating the current diversified platform. In July 2025, the company divested its Residential and Light Commercial HVAC business to Robert Bosch GmbH as part of ongoing portfolio simplification.
