The business

Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) operates as a diversified food retailer with a comprehensive ecosystem built around its core grocery business. Founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1902, the company maintains its corporate presence at www.thekrogerco.com and serves approximately 63 million households annually across 35 states and the District of Columbia.

As of January 31, 2026, Kroger operates 2,697 supermarkets under various local banner names, with 2,250 locations featuring pharmacies and 1,731 equipped with fuel centers. The company employs more than 403,000 full- and part-time associates. Approximately 51 percent of supermarkets operate in company-owned facilities, including some on leased land. The retail network provides customers with in-store and digital shopping options through pickup and delivery services available at 2,408 locations, complemented by fulfillment centers and third-party platform integration.

Kroger's strategy centers on four primary growth drivers: Fresh, Our Brands, Personalization, and eCommerce. Our Brands represents a significant merchandising pillar, generating over $39 billion in sales and comprising approximately 20 percent of private label units produced in company-owned food production plants. The company operates 33 food production facilities including dairies, deli and bakery plants, grocery product plants, beverage plants, meat plants, and cheese plants.

The company's alternative profit business leverages its extensive first-party customer data and loyalty program, through which over 95 percent of transactions are tethered to a Kroger loyalty card. Kroger Precision Marketing, the retail media subsidiary, provides targeted advertising solutions for consumer-packaged goods companies and other industry partners, representing a high-margin growth opportunity. The company also operates 84.51° LLC, a data analytics subsidiary, and Kroger Personal Finance.

More than two-thirds of Kroger's associates are covered by collective bargaining agreements with approximately 350 union contracts. The company emphasizes competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, training and development programs, and workplace safety as core components of its human capital strategy. Kroger's business model generates revenue primarily through consumer product sales in stores and via online platforms, with profitability derived from selling products at prices exceeding procurement, distribution, facility, and operational costs.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
