MetLife serves a diverse global customer base including corporations, institutions, governments, and individuals across multiple continents. The company holds leading market positions in the United States, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. As one of the largest institutional investors in the United States, MetLife maintains a substantial general account portfolio invested primarily in fixed income securities, mortgage loans, real estate, and equity securities.

The company operates through six reportable segments. Group Benefits, based in the United States, offers life insurance, dental, disability, accident and health insurance, vision coverage, and prepaid legal and pet insurance products primarily to employers. Retirement and Income Solutions provides funding and financing solutions for institutional customers managing employee benefit liabilities through annuities, stable value products, and pension risk transfer solutions. The Asia segment operates across nine jurisdictions with Japan as its largest market, offering life insurance, accident and health products, and retirement savings solutions. Latin America operates primarily in Mexico and Chile through multi-channel distribution including exclusive agency networks and direct marketing. The Europe, Middle East and Africa segment serves both developed and emerging markets with life insurance, retirement products, and accident and health coverage. MetLife Investment Management provides institutional asset management and advisory services in public and private fixed income, real estate, equity, alternatives, and multi-asset solutions to institutional investors worldwide.

The company's business model leverages a trusted global brand, diversified product portfolio, and resilient operations across attractive markets. MetLife executes its New Frontier strategy designed to accelerate growth through extending Group Benefits leadership, capitalizing on its retirement platform, expanding asset management capabilities, and growing in high-growth international markets. The company completed the acquisition of PineBridge Investments in December 2025 to strengthen its asset management operations and broaden global product offerings and distribution reach.
