The business

UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: UMB) is a financial holding company headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri that provides comprehensive banking services and asset servicing to customers throughout the United States and globally. The company operates through three primary business segments: Commercial Banking, Institutional Banking, and Personal Banking, serving commercial, retail, government, and correspondent-bank customers with a diverse array of financial products and services.

The company's principal operating subsidiary is UMB Bank, National Association, which offers a full complement of banking products including asset-management, trust, bankcard, and cash-management services across the Midwestern, Southwestern, and Western regions of the United States. UMB Financial Corporation also owns UMB Fund Services, Inc., a significant nonbank subsidiary with offices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; and Ogden, Utah that provides fund accounting, transfer agency, and other services to mutual fund and alternative-investment groups. Additional subsidiaries include UMB Financial Services, Inc., UMB Asset Management, LLC, and UMB Insurance, Inc., which collectively expand the company's service offerings across investment advisory, securities processing, and insurance domains.

As of December 31, 2025, the company employed approximately 5,222 associates on a full-time equivalent basis. The company's scale expanded significantly following its acquisition of Heartland Financial USA, Inc. on January 31, 2025, in an all-stock transaction that included the merger of Heartland's bank subsidiary into UMB Bank. This acquisition enhanced the company's geographic reach and service capabilities across multiple regions.

The company operates as a bank holding company registered under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956 and as a financial holding company under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999. UMB Financial Corporation competes in intensely competitive markets against traditional financial institutions, fintech companies, and technology firms offering banking, lending, investment advisory, and asset servicing solutions. The company's competitive positioning relies on its ability to attract and retain talented employees, invest in technology infrastructure, and innovate while managing expenses effectively.
