The business

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is a leading global aerospace and defense technology company headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, with operations across the United States and international markets. The company delivers a broad portfolio of products, services and solutions primarily to the U.S. Department of War and intelligence community, with 84 percent of 2025 sales derived from the U.S. government. Northrop Grumman maintains approximately 95,000 employees and generated $41.954 billion in total sales during fiscal year 2025.

The company operates through four reportable segments: Aeronautics Systems, Defense Systems, Mission Systems, and Space Systems. Aeronautics Systems designs and produces military aircraft including the B-21 Raider long-range strike aircraft, F-35 Lightning II fuselage components, and high-altitude long-endurance unmanned systems. Defense Systems develops strategic deterrent systems, precision strike weapons, missile defense solutions, and advanced tactical weapons including the Sentinel ICBM modernization program and hypersonic systems. Mission Systems provides radar, electro-optical and infrared sensors, command and control systems, electronic warfare capabilities, advanced microelectronics, and cyber solutions. Space Systems delivers satellites, spacecraft systems, missile defense interceptors, and launch vehicles including solid rocket boosters for commercial and government space missions.

Northrop Grumman's history reflects significant industry consolidation, including the 1994 merger with Grumman Corporation, acquisitions of Westinghouse defense electronics, Litton Industries, TRW, and Orbital ATK, alongside strategic divestitures such as the 2011 spinoff of Huntington Ingalls Industries and 2021 sale of its IT and mission support services business. The company competes with Boeing, General Dynamics, L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, and RTX Corporation, alongside emerging market entrants. Approximately half of 2025 sales derived from cost-type contracts and half from fixed-price contracts. The company maintains a total backlog of $95.7 billion as of December 31, 2025.
