The business

Southern Company (NYSE: SO) is a holding company that owns and operates one of the largest energy utility systems in the United States. The company's website is www.southerncompany.com.

Southern Company's primary business consists of three traditional vertically integrated electric operating companies—Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power—which generate, transmit, and distribute electricity to retail customers across Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. These utilities serve approximately 17 million people across 116,000 square miles of territory. The company also owns Southern Power Company, which develops, constructs, acquires, and operates power generation assets including battery energy storage projects, selling electricity at market-based rates in the wholesale market. Southern Power's generation fleet totals 12,648 megawatts of nameplate capacity across multiple partnerships and subsidiaries.

Southern Company Gas, an energy services holding company, represents another major segment of the business. It operates approximately 77,900 miles of natural gas pipelines and 14 storage facilities with total capacity of 157 billion cubic feet, serving approximately 4.4 million customers across Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Southern Company Gas also maintains gas pipeline investments, including a 50 percent interest in Southern Natural Gas Company and a 50 percent joint ownership interest in the Dalton Pipeline, plus gas marketing services through SouthStar.

The company's construction program reflects significant capital investment, with 2026 expenditures projected at approximately $15.9 billion across the system. The traditional electric operating companies are investing substantially in new generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, and environmental compliance, driven partly by projected significant growth in electricity demand from data centers and other large load customers. The company has contracted with new data centers and large load customers covering approximately nine gigawatts of electric load since 2023.

Southern Company also owns Southern Communications Services (Southern Linc), which provides digital wireless communications and fiber optics services across approximately 122,000 square miles in the Southeast, as well as Southern Nuclear Operating Company, which operates the system's nuclear plants, and PowerSecure, which develops distributed energy and resilience solutions.
