The company operates through three reportable segments: Retail, Foodservice, and International. The Retail segment processes and markets food products sold through grocery stores, mass merchandisers, club stores, natural food chains, drug stores, discount chains, and e-commerce providers in the United States, and includes results from the MegaMex Foods joint venture. The Foodservice segment supplies food products to distributors and operators across restaurants, hospitality, healthcare, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, and convenience stores. The International segment processes and sells products through retail and foodservice channels internationally, including operations in China and Brazil, along with equity method investments and royalty arrangements.

Hormel's major brands include Planters, SPAM, Jennie-O, Skippy, Applegate, Wholly, Hormel Black Label, Fontanini, Bacon1, and Hormel pepperoni, among others. The company's product portfolio encompasses meat, nuts, and other food products distributed across multiple channels in all 50 U.S. states and internationally across markets including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, and South Korea.

As of October 26, 2025, Hormel employed approximately 20,000 active employees, with over 90 percent located within the United States. Approximately 20 percent of employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements. The company is a member of the S&P 500 Index and the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats. Walmart and its subsidiaries represent the company's largest customer, accounting for approximately 15.6 percent of consolidated gross sales, while the top five customers collectively represent approximately 38 percent of sales. The company competes on price, product quality, brand identification, product line breadth, and customer service against national and regional producers of meat and protein sources.
