Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation, doing business as Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB), operates as a global provider of value-added, technology-based locomotives, equipment, systems and services for the freight rail and passenger transit industries. The company maintains its website at www.wabteccorp.com and operates with approximately 31,000 employees across more than 50 countries worldwide.
Wabtec traces its origins to 1869 when George Westinghouse invented the air brake, establishing the original Westinghouse Air Brake Company. The modern entity was formed in 1990 through the acquisition of certain assets from American Standard, and the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995. Strategic acquisitions have shaped the company's evolution, including the 1999 merger with MotivePower Industries, the 2017 acquisition of Faiveley Transport, a leading provider of integrated systems for the global transit rail market, and the 2019 acquisition of GE Transportation, which brought locomotive manufacturing and digital solutions capabilities into the fold.
The company operates through two principal business segments. The Freight Segment, representing approximately 72 percent of total net sales, manufactures new and modernized locomotives, provides aftermarket parts and services, supplies rail control and infrastructure products, and delivers software-enabled solutions for transportation and mining industries. The Transit Segment, accounting for approximately 28 percent of net sales, manufactures and services components for passenger transit vehicles including regional trains, high-speed trains, subway cars, and light-rail vehicles.
Wabtec's product portfolio spans diesel-electric and liquid natural gas powered locomotives, digital intelligence solutions including Positive Train Control equipment and railway electronics, freight car components, braking systems, heating and cooling equipment, pantographs, doors and access systems, and comprehensive maintenance and overhaul services. The company maintains a significant installed base of nearly 24,600 locomotives globally, which generates recurring aftermarket revenue representing approximately 60 percent of total net sales.
The company's competitive strengths include over 150 years of innovation history, a comprehensive product portfolio balancing original equipment and aftermarket business, leading design and engineering capabilities, and expertise in fuel efficiency and digital transformation. Wabtec serves a diverse customer base including major railroads, transit authorities, equipment manufacturers, leasing companies, and industrial customers in mining and marine sectors. The company's total backlog was approximately $27.4 billion at December 31, 2025.
