The business

Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMR) operates as a metallurgical coal producer focused on the Central Appalachian Coal Basin, with its primary operations centered at the Virginia Complex located across Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Wise counties in Virginia. The company's website is located at www.mma1.com, though Alpha maintains its own corporate headquarters in Bristol, Tennessee. Alpha's core business involves the extraction, processing, and sale of high-quality coking coal products used primarily in steel production and other industrial applications.

The Virginia Complex represents Alpha's primary operational asset and comprises approximately 321,600 acres of mineral control distributed across 18 separate leases and five owned tracts. The operation includes multiple underground mines, surface mines, and highwall mining operations that extract coal from historically significant seams including the Jawbone, Jawbone Rider, Upper Banner, Lower Banner, Big Fork, Kennedy, Aily, Raven, and Tiller seams. As of December 31, 2025, the company controlled demonstrated coal reserves of 65.24 million tons on a marketable sales basis, with 72 percent classified as proven reserves and 28 percent as probable reserves.

The Virginia Complex operates two primary coal preparation plants: the McClure River Preparation Plant in Dickenson County with a feed rate capacity of 1,100 raw tons per hour, and the Tom's Creek Preparation Plant in Wise County with similar processing capacity. These facilities utilize heavy media separation, cyclone processing, froth flotation, and thermal drying technologies to produce metallurgical coal products with varying ash and sulfur content specifications. The company's active mining operations as of year-end 2025 included underground mines at Deep Mine 41, Deep Mine 42, Deep Mine 44, and Bear Ridge, along with surface operations at the 88 Strip and Long Branch mines, supplemented by highwall mining activities.

Alpha's coal products are distributed through established transportation networks via CSX and Norfolk Southern railway systems, with the majority of production destined for international markets as part of blended coal products. The company's life-of-mine production plan extends through 2060, with underground reserves expected to deplete in 2060 and surface reserves in 2038.
