The company specializes in Tier-1 super-spec rigs equipped with advanced technologies such as its proprietary APEX rigs featuring AC-powered electric systems and high-pressure mud systems. The drilling services division also provides comprehensive directional drilling services, measurement-while-drilling equipment, wellbore placement optimization services, and electrical controls and automation solutions.
The completion services segment delivers hydraulic fracturing, wireline and pumping, completion support, and cementing services across major U.S. basins including the Permian, Marcellus Shale/Utica, Eagle Ford, Haynesville, and Bakken/Rockies formations. This division operates a natural gas-powered solutions portfolio and the proprietary Vertex fully automated completions process integrated with the eos digital completions management platform. The segment also includes power solutions natural gas fueling operations and proppant logistics and storage capabilities.
The drilling products segment, operating under the Ulterra brand, manufactures and distributes polycrystalline diamond compact drill bits and downhole tools through facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, Leduc, Alberta, and Saudi Arabia, serving energy and mining markets across more than thirty countries. The company employs approximately 7,900 full-time employees and maintains a customer base including major, independent, and other oil and natural gas operators. Patterson-UTI divested its oilfield rentals business in April 2025 and maintains a non-operating working interest in oil and natural gas assets located in Texas and New Mexico.
