The business

Markel Group Inc. (NYSE: MKL) operates as a distinctive holding company that owns and manages independently operated businesses across diverse industries while maintaining a long-term investment orientation. The company's website is www.mklgroup.com.

The cornerstone of Markel Group's strategy is Markel Insurance, a specialty insurance business that provides hard-to-place risks not typically available through standard insurance markets. Markel Insurance generated approximately 60 percent of the company's operating revenues in 2025 and operates through four divisions: U.S. Wholesale and Specialty, Program and Solutions, International, and Global Reinsurance (which entered run-off in 2025). The insurance segment writes over 100 individually managed products including general liability, professional liability, personal lines, marine and energy, property, specialty programs, workers' compensation, and credit and surety coverages. Markel Insurance maintains a global underwriting presence across the United States, United Kingdom, Bermuda, and Germany, with 73 percent of gross premium writings attributed to U.S. risks in 2025.

Beyond insurance, Markel Group operates three additional reportable segments. The Industrial segment, representing approximately 25 percent of revenues, includes businesses such as Lansing Building Products, Metromont precast concrete, VSC Fire & Security, Cottrell car-hauling equipment, AMF Bakery Systems, Buckner HeavyLift Cranes, and Havco flooring. The Financial segment, comprising roughly 5 percent of revenues, includes State National's fronting and collateral protection insurance services and Nephila's insurance-linked securities management. The Consumer and Other segment, representing approximately 9 percent of revenues, includes Costa Farms ornamental plants, CapTech information technology consulting, Eagle Construction, and Brahmin leather accessories.

Markel Group's business model emphasizes decentralized leadership, long-term capital compounding, and disciplined underwriting. The company maintains invested assets of approximately $37.4 billion and shareholders' equity of $18.6 billion as of year-end 2025. The company's architecture prioritizes financial strength through diverse cash flows, low debt levels, and reinvestment in existing businesses, strategic acquisitions, publicly traded securities, and share repurchases.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
