Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED) operates as a holding company providing energy services to customers in New York and New Jersey through its regulated utility subsidiaries and transmission investments. The company's website is www.conedison.com.
The company's principal operations consist of three main business segments. Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (CECONY) provides electric service to approximately 3.7 million customers across New York City and most of Westchester County, delivers gas to approximately 1.1 million customers in Manhattan, the Bronx, parts of Queens and Westchester County, and operates the largest steam distribution system in the United States serving approximately 1,490 customers in parts of Manhattan. Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R), together with its New Jersey subsidiary Rockland Electric Company, provides electric service to approximately 0.3 million customers in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey and delivers gas to over 0.1 million customers in southeastern New York. Con Edison Transmission, Inc. develops and invests in electric transmission projects and owns interests in both electric and gas assets through joint ventures.
The Utilities operate in a highly regulated environment under the oversight of the New York State Public Service Commission and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Their business model centers on providing reliable energy delivery infrastructure rather than energy generation or supply, with customers able to purchase electricity and gas from alternative suppliers while paying the Utilities for delivery service. The company's rate plans are designed to recover costs of service, including capital investments in energy delivery systems.
In 2025, the Utilities invested approximately $4.9 billion to upgrade and reinforce their energy delivery systems, with significant capital investments planned through 2030. The company maintains a focus on clean energy transition, supporting New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and New York City's Climate Mobilization Act through infrastructure modernization and distributed energy resource integration. Con Edison anticipates that its regulated utility operations will continue to provide substantially all of its earnings over the coming years.
