The business

Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK) operates as a major energy company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, providing electricity and natural gas services across the Southeast and Midwest regions of the United States. The company's website is duke-energy.com.

Duke Energy operates through two primary reportable business segments: Electric Utilities and Infrastructure (EU&I) and Gas Utilities and Infrastructure (GU&I), with additional operations presented as Other. The EU&I segment conducts regulated electric utility operations primarily through subsidiaries including Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, Duke Energy Florida, Duke Energy Indiana, and Duke Energy Ohio. This segment generates, transmits, distributes and sells electricity to approximately 8.7 million retail customers across a service territory spanning approximately 90,000 square miles with an estimated population of 27 million. The GU&I segment operates natural gas distribution and transmission services through Piedmont Natural Gas Company, Duke Energy Ohio, and Duke Energy Kentucky, serving approximately 1.8 million total customers including one million in the Carolinas, 205,000 in Tennessee, and 565,000 in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky.

EU&I's generation portfolio comprises approximately 55,713 megawatts of capacity, with energy sourced from natural gas and fuel oil (33.5 percent), nuclear fuel (27.5 percent), coal (14.5 percent), hydroelectric and solar (2.0 percent), and purchased power (22.5 percent). The company owns or partially owns eleven operating nuclear reactors across six operating stations. GU&I maintains investments in pipeline transmission projects, renewable natural gas initiatives, and natural gas storage facilities.

Duke Energy's operations are subject to regulation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, state utility commissions, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and various environmental agencies. The company maintains significant capital investment programs focused on grid modernization, fleet modernization, and carbon emissions reduction. In August 2025, Duke Energy entered into an investment agreement with Brookfield Super-Core Infrastructure Partners involving a $6 billion investment for an anticipated 19.7 percent indirect stake in Duke Energy Florida. Additionally, Piedmont entered into a purchase agreement in July 2025 to sell its Tennessee business to Spire Inc., with completion expected in March 2026.
