The business

CSX Corporation (NASDAQ: CSX) operates as one of the nation's leading transportation companies, providing rail-based freight transportation services across North America. The company's website is www.csx.com. CSX Transportation, Inc., the principal operating subsidiary, maintains an extensive network of approximately 20,000 route miles serving 26 states east of the Mississippi River, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The company provides access to over 70 ocean, river, and lake port terminals along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

During 2025, CSX generated $14.1 billion in revenue across four primary lines of business. The merchandise business, representing 62 percent of revenue, shipped 2.6 million carloads and generated $8.8 billion. The intermodal business contributed 15 percent of revenue with 3.0 million units shipped and $2.1 billion in revenue. The coal business generated $1.9 billion, or 13 percent of revenue, shipping 718 thousand carloads. The trucking business, primarily through Quality Carriers, contributed $816 million, or 6 percent of revenue. Other revenue sources accounted for 4 percent of total revenue.

CSX operates through several key subsidiaries beyond its main transportation division. Quality Carriers is the largest provider of bulk liquid chemicals truck transportation in North America. CSX Intermodal Terminals owns and operates a system of approximately 30 intermodal terminals predominantly in the eastern United States. Total Distribution Services serves the automotive industry with distribution centers and storage locations. TRANSFLO connects non-rail served customers to rail benefits through product transfers from rail to trucks, with major markets in chemicals and agriculture.

The company employed approximately 23,000 employees as of December 2025, with approximately 16,900 union members covered by national or CSX-specific agreements. CSX maintains a heritage dating back nearly 200 years, tracing its roots to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, chartered in 1827. The company's current network structure resulted from the 1980 merger of the Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries, followed by the acquisition of key Conrail portions and the Pan Am network, creating a comprehensive eastern United States rail system.

Fund ownership counts N-PORT filers only, so it is a floor rather than a census — pensions, insurers and direct holders are not visible here, and the remainder is not “held by individuals”.

Fund ownership is a subset of institutional 13F ownership — the two describe overlapping populations and must not be added together.
