In the company’s own words
Agios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: AGIO) is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing innovative medicines for rare diseases, with a primary focus on classical hematology and cellular metabolism. The company's website is www.agios.com.
Agios markets two FDA-approved products based on its lead compound mitapivat, a pyruvate kinase activator. PYRUKYND® treats hemolytic anemia in adults with pyruvate kinase deficiency and has received approvals in the European Union and Great Britain for the same indication. AQVESME™, approved in December 2025, treats anemia in adults with non-transfusion-dependent and transfusion-dependent alpha- or beta-thalassemia in the United States and represents the only FDA-approved medicine for anemia in both forms of thalassemia. The company also markets PYRUKYND® in Saudi Arabia for thalassemia treatment and maintains a global managed access program for eligible patients in other jurisdictions.
Beyond its approved products, Agios maintains a pipeline of clinical-stage candidates. Tebapivat, a novel pyruvate kinase activator, is in development for lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes and sickle cell disease. The company is evaluating mitapivat for pediatric pyruvate kinase deficiency and sickle cell disease, with plans to submit a U.S. marketing application for the latter following a pre-supplemental New Drug Application meeting in the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, Agios is developing AG-181, a phenylalanine hydroxylase stabilizer for phenylketonuria treatment, and AG-236, an siRNA targeting the TMPRSS6 gene for polycythemia vera, which was in-licensed from Alnylam Pharmaceuticals in July 2023.
The company previously divested its oncology business to Servier Pharmaceuticals in March 2021 and subsequently sold royalty rights related to vorasidenib to Royalty Pharma in August 2024, generating significant non-operating income. Agios maintains full ownership of its hematology franchise and has established commercial infrastructure in the United States while entering into distribution agreements with NewBridge Pharmaceuticals for the Gulf Cooperation Council region and Avanzanite Bioscience for the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
