What Allegiant Travel CO does
In the company’s own words
Allegiant Travel Company (NASDAQ: ALGT) operates a distinctive leisure-focused airline business model centered on serving under-served cities across the United States. The company's website is allegiantair.com. Founded in 1997 and incorporated in Nevada, Allegiant distinguishes itself from traditional carriers by targeting price-sensitive leisure travelers rather than business customers, operating nonstop flights exclusively from small and medium-sized cities to popular leisure destinations.
As of February 1, 2026, Allegiant operates 578 routes to 126 cities, with 433 routes featuring no current nonstop competition from other carriers. The airline maintains a fleet of 122 aircraft consisting of 16 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 106 Airbus A320 series aircraft. The company operates 22 bases throughout the country, providing geographic diversity and operational flexibility. Allegiant serves approximately 88 origination cities and 33 leisure destinations across 42 states, with major leisure hubs including Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Punta Gorda.
The company's revenue model combines scheduled service air transportation with substantial ancillary revenue streams. Ancillary offerings include air-related services such as baggage fees, advance seat assignments, priority boarding, and onboard food and beverage sales, as well as third-party products including hotel rooms, rental cars, and travel insurance. Ancillary revenue reached $76.35 per passenger in 2025. The company also generates revenue through fixed-fee contract air transportation and charter services.
Allegiant maintains a low-cost structure through direct-to-consumer distribution via its website, which accounted for 92.3 percent of scheduled service revenue in 2025, avoiding traditional global distribution system fees. The airline owns or finance leases all but nine aircraft in its operating fleet, minimizing ownership costs. As of December 31, 2025, Allegiant employed 5,616 full-time equivalent employees and maintained unrestricted cash and investments of $838.5 million.
In January 2026, Allegiant announced plans to acquire Sun Country Airlines Holdings, Inc., a transaction anticipated to close in the second half of 2026. The combined entity would operate approximately 195 aircraft with 30 on order and 80 additional options, supporting Allegiant's strategic growth objectives while maintaining its leisure-focused market positioning.
