What AMERICAN SUPERCONDUCTOR CORP does
In the company’s own words
American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) designs, develops, and deploys power control solutions that harmonize complex energy systems and enable reliable, efficient power delivery across multiple markets. The company operates through two reportable segments: Grid and Wind, serving customers globally including utilities, industrial manufacturers, renewable energy developers, the U.S. Navy, and wind turbine manufacturers.
The Grid segment provides comprehensive power system solutions including D-VAR voltage control systems, high-temperature superconductor cable systems, transformers, rectifiers, power supplies, and reactive compensation solutions. Through recent acquisitions of NWL and Comtrafo, the segment expanded its portfolio to include engineered power conversion solutions for industrial and military applications, as well as large power and distribution transformers for utility and industrial customers. The Wind segment designs and engineers wind turbines with power ratings of 2 megawatts and higher, provides electrical control systems that regulate voltage and optimize turbine efficiency, and delivers extensive customer support services to wind turbine manufacturers. The company has shipped electrical components sufficient to power over 18,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity globally.
AMSC's competitive strengths center on proprietary superconductor wire technology, particularly its Amperium high-temperature superconductor wire manufactured from yttrium barium copper oxide, which enables superior power transmission with minimal losses compared to conventional copper and aluminum conductors. The company also leverages proprietary smart materials, advanced software and control systems, and integrated turnkey solutions that differentiate its offerings in power grid modernization, industrial power quality, naval ship protection, and wind energy markets.
The company maintains a global operational footprint with manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, Brazil, Austria, and Poland, complemented by sales and service offices across Australia, Brazil, India, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. AMSC estimates its total addressable global market at over fifteen billion dollars annually, driven by record global energy transition investments, grid modernization needs, renewable energy expansion, semiconductor manufacturing growth, and U.S. military modernization initiatives.
