What Century Aluminum Company does

In the company’s own words

Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ: CENX) is a global producer of primary aluminum with operations in the United States, Iceland, Jamaica, and the Netherlands. The company operates through a single reportable segment focused on primary aluminum production and related upstream and downstream operations. Century's website is located at www.centuryaluminum.com.

The company operates three primary aluminum smelters with a combined annual production capacity of approximately 770,000 tonnes per year. Its U.S. facilities include the Sebree smelter in Kentucky with 220,000 tonnes of annual capacity and the Mt. Holly smelter in South Carolina with 230,000 tonnes of capacity. The Grundartangi smelter in Iceland represents the company's most modern facility with 320,000 tonnes of annual capacity and produces both standard-grade aluminum ingot and value-added primary foundry alloy products. In 2025, Century produced approximately 638,000 tonnes of primary aluminum across these operations.

Beyond primary aluminum production, Century owns a carbon anode production facility in Vlissingen, Netherlands, with annual capacity of approximately 161,000 tonnes, which primarily supplies the Grundartangi smelter. The company also holds a 55 percent joint venture interest in Jamalco, a bauxite mining and alumina refining operation in Jamaica with approximately 1.4 million tonnes of alumina production capacity, providing vertical integration with a critical raw material supply.

As of December 31, 2025, Century employed 2,906 people across its global operations, with 1,324 in the United States, 857 in Jamaica, 636 in Iceland, and 89 in the Netherlands. The company derives substantially all consolidated net sales from primary aluminum, with approximately 54 percent of 2025 sales from Glencore plc and its affiliates, which beneficially owns 36.4 percent of Century's outstanding common stock. Century's competitive advantages include access to low-cost hydroelectric and geothermal power in Iceland, duty-free market access in the United States and European Union, proximity to major customer markets, and vertical integration through Jamalco. The company produces Natur-Al branded low-carbon aluminum products leveraging its sustainable power sources.
