The company traces its origins to 1833 when Chemung Canal Bank was established, evolving through various reorganizations and name changes to become Chemung Canal Trust Company in 1903. Chemung Financial Corporation was incorporated in 1985 to acquire the bank and achieved financial holding company status in 2000, enabling expansion into insurance products, mutual funds, and brokerage services. The corporation has grown through two whole bank acquisitions, including Canton Bancorp in 2009 and Fort Orange Financial Corp in 2011, along with multiple branch acquisitions across New York and Pennsylvania.
