What COGENT COMMUNICATIONS HOLDINGS, INC. does

In the company’s own words

Cogent Communications Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCIH) operates as a facilities-based provider of high-speed Internet access, private network services, optical wavelength and optical transport services, and data center colocation space and power across 57 countries spanning North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. The company's website is www.cogentco.com.

The company operates two distinct networks serving different customer segments. Its IP Network provides Internet-based services to corporate customers, net-centric customers including content delivery networks and access networks, and enterprise customers. The Optical Wave Network, developed following the acquisition of Sprint Communications' long-haul fiber assets in May 2023, offers dedicated optical transport connectivity. Cogent's infrastructure includes 3,579 on-net buildings across 305 metropolitan markets, comprising 1,881 multi-tenant office buildings, 1,715 carrier-neutral data centers, 100 Cogent data centers, and 87 edge data centers totaling 2.1 million square feet with 213 megawatts of power capacity. The company's Optical Wave Network reaches 1,068 wave-enabled locations across 150 metropolitan markets in North America.

Cogent serves approximately 117,743 customer connections across three segments: 64,551 net-centric connections, 42,579 corporate connections, and 10,513 enterprise connections. The company also interconnects with 7,659 networks and maintains Tier 1 ISP status with settlement-free peering arrangements with 22 other major ISPs. The company owns approximately 38 million IPv4 addresses, with 15.3 million leased to customers as of December 31, 2025.

The company's competitive positioning centers on low-cost operations through single-protocol network design, a combination of owned and leased dark fiber infrastructure, rapid service provisioning, and superior network reliability. Following the Sprint acquisition, Cogent operates approximately 23,500 route miles of owned fiber in the continental United States alongside its extensive leased fiber portfolio. The company maintains field services organizations with over 340 employees globally supporting deployment and maintenance across its infrastructure footprint.
