The company's primary subsidiary is Community Bank, N.A., a federally chartered national bank operating 192 full-service branches and 8 drive-thru only locations across 42 counties in Upstate New York, 9 counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania, 12 counties in Vermont, 1 county in Western Massachusetts and 1 county in Southern New Hampshire. The Bank offers comprehensive commercial and retail banking services including lending, deposit products, and treasury management.

Community Financial System operates through four reportable business segments. The Banking and Corporate segment provides traditional banking services through the Bank's branch network. The Employee Benefit Services segment, operated through Benefit Plans Administrative Services, Inc. and its subsidiaries, provides defined contribution plan administration, institutional transfer agency, master recordkeeping, fund administration, trust services and actuarial consulting on a national scale. The Insurance Services segment, conducted through OneGroup, offers personal and commercial lines of insurance and risk management products. The Wealth Management Services segment provides wealth management, retirement planning, fiduciary services, trust administration and personal financial planning through the Bank's Nottingham Trust division and affiliated entities.

As of December 31, 2025, the company employed 3,001 total employees, comprising 2,853 full-time and 148 part-time and temporary employees distributed across its operating segments and geographic footprint. The employee base concentrates primarily in New York, Pennsylvania and New England, with approximately 2,136 employees in New York, 312 in Pennsylvania and 323 in Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The company completed significant acquisitions during 2025, including seven branch locations in the Lehigh Valley market from Santander Bank, N.A., acquiring $31.9 million in loans and $543.7 million in deposits. Additionally, the company acquired certain assets of financial services companies providing insurance, employee benefit and wealth management services through its operating subsidiaries.
