What Core Scientific, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Core Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: CORZ) designs, builds and operates large-scale, purpose-built data centers that support high-density colocation services and digital asset mining. The company's website is www.corescientific.com.
Founded in 2017, Core Scientific has evolved from a digital asset mining operator into a diversified infrastructure provider serving the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence and high-performance computing markets. The company operates three reportable business segments: Colocation, which provides high-density colocation services to third-party customers for AI and HPC operations; Digital Asset Self-Mining, which generates revenue from mining bitcoin for the company's own account; and Digital Asset Hosted Mining, which provides hosting services to third-party digital asset miners. In 2025, the majority of revenue was derived from digital asset self-mining, though the company expects meaningful revenue from colocation services in 2026 as customer capacity comes online. The company intends to convert its entire megawatt portfolio to high-density colocation infrastructure over the next three years.
As of December 31, 2025, Core Scientific owned or leased ten data centers across seven U.S. states, representing approximately 1.4 gigawatts of gross utility power capacity or approximately 920 megawatts of total leasable customer power capacity. The company deployed approximately 151,400 bitcoin miners representing 15.7 exahash per second for self-mining operations and 2.2 exahash per second for hosted mining operations. Core Scientific maintains relationships with major electric utility providers including Tennessee Valley Authority, Duke Energy, Denton Municipal Electric, and Texas New-Mexico Power.
The company competes in both the high-density colocation market against established data center providers and in bitcoin mining against global mining operations. Core Scientific employs 325 full-time employees across 26 U.S. states. The company has filed over 130 patent applications in technologies including blockchain, data center management, infrastructure and cooling. Core Scientific's competitive advantages include experienced engineering and development teams, proven ability to rapidly deliver scalable data centers, and technical expertise developed through years of managing power-intensive mining operations.
