What Energy Recovery, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Energy Recovery, Inc. (NASDAQ: ERII) designs and manufactures energy-saving technology for critical infrastructure, with headquarters and principal operations in San Leandro, California, and additional manufacturing facilities in Tracy, California. The company's website is www.energyrecovery.com.
The company operates through two primary segments: Water and Emerging Technologies. The Water segment, which represents the substantial majority of revenue, focuses on energy recovery devices for reverse osmosis desalination and wastewater treatment applications. Energy Recovery's flagship product, the PX Pressure Exchanger, is an isobaric energy recovery device made with highly engineered ceramic components that efficiently captures and transfers pressure energy in pressurized fluid-flow systems. The PX operates at up to 98 percent efficiency with no electricity consumption and minimal scheduled maintenance, reducing energy usage by up to 60 percent in seawater reverse osmosis facilities. The company also manufactures the Ultra High-Pressure PX for wastewater applications, low-pressure PX models for brackish water treatment, hydraulic turbochargers, and high-pressure pumps and circulation booster pumps that complement its energy recovery devices.
The Water segment serves three distinct sales channels: megaproject customers developing large-scale desalination plants exceeding 50,000 cubic meters per day; original equipment manufacturers supplying smaller to medium-sized systems; and aftermarket customers purchasing spare parts and services for existing installations. Worldwide seawater desalination plants using Energy Recovery's products produce over 43 million cubic meters of water daily.
The Emerging Technologies segment develops applications of the company's pressure exchanger technology beyond water treatment. The PX G1300 applies this technology to CO2-based refrigeration systems to reduce energy consumption and operating costs. In February 2026, the company decided to wind down operations of its CO2 retail grocery business due to fundamental changes in market outlook.
Energy Recovery maintains a global direct sales force and technical support staff across the United States, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Asia. The company manufactures products in California facilities using vertically integrated ceramics precision manufacturing processes and maintains advanced analytical and testing capabilities supporting ongoing research and development initiatives.
