What Gevo, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Gevo, Inc. (Nasdaq: GEVO) is a renewable fuels and chemicals company focused on decarbonizing hard-to-electrify market sectors including aviation, specialty fuels, on-road transportation, chemicals, materials, and food chain products. The company operates through its website at www.gevo.com and develops competitively priced, renewable, drop-in products while generating carbon abatement value through proprietary production processes and plant design.
The company's primary business focus is carbon-abated hydrocarbon fuels, particularly sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced through its proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) platform. Gevo operates multiple business segments including its core ATJ fuel production business, renewable natural gas (RNG) operations in Northwest Iowa, and the Verity software platform for carbon intensity tracking and compliance reporting. In January 2025, Gevo acquired substantially all assets of Red Trail Energy in North Dakota, adding an operating ethanol production facility with carbon capture and sequestration capabilities that produces ethanol, distillers grains, and corn oil while sequestering carbon dioxide.
The company's ATJ platform consists of modular facility designs in three standardized sizes: ATJ-30, ATJ-60, and ATJ-150, producing approximately 30, 60, and 150 million gallons per year of SAF respectively. Gevo plans to deploy ATJ-30 at its North Dakota facility, leveraging existing low-carbon ethanol production. The RNG business generates revenue through renewable natural gas sales and environmental attributes including California Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits and EPA Renewable Fuel Standard identification numbers.
Gevo maintains a proprietary intellectual property portfolio of over 350 patents and extensive trade secrets centered on ATJ platforms and related technologies. The company employs 151 full-time employees across North America, with significant operations in North Dakota, Colorado, Texas, and Iowa. The company's vertically integrated technology platform creates competitive advantages through multiple opportunities to reduce carbon intensity scores, scalable production technology, and modular facility designs enabling rapid deployment. Gevo's business model monetizes carbon abatement value through direct carbon credit sales, renewable fuel credits, federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act, and state-level clean fuel regulations.
