Founded in 2004, Green Plains owns nine strategically located ethanol production facilities across the Midwest in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Eight facilities are currently operational with a combined capacity to process approximately 246 million bushels of corn annually and produce 730 million gallons of ethanol, 1.7 million tons of distillers grains and Ultra-High Protein, and 254 million pounds of renewable corn oil. At full capacity across all nine plants, the company can process approximately 287 million bushels of corn annually and produce approximately 850 million gallons of ethanol.
The company operates through two reportable segments: Ethanol Production and Agribusiness and Energy Services. The Ethanol Production segment encompasses the production, storage, and transportation of ethanol, distillers grains, Ultra-High Protein, and renewable corn oil at the company's biorefineries. The Agribusiness and Energy Services segment includes grain procurement, storage, commodity marketing, and natural gas trading operations.
Green Plains employs 642 full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal employees as of December 31, 2025, with 71 employees at its corporate office in Omaha, Nebraska. The company maintains approximately 12 million bushels of on-site grain storage capacity across its facilities and operates a leased railcar fleet of approximately 1,944 ethanol railcars and 860 hopper and tank cars for product transportation.
The company's competitive strengths include disciplined risk management through commodity hedging strategies, technology integration including ownership of Fluid Quip Technologies and proprietary processes like MSC™ and CST™, and operational excellence across its platform. Green Plains has positioned itself to benefit from expanding low-carbon fuel markets through carbon capture and sequestration projects at seven facilities, with three Nebraska locations already operational and connected to the Trailblazer CO2 Pipeline for permanent sequestration.
