What HCI Group, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
HCI Group, Inc. (NYSE: HCI) operates as a property and casualty insurance company primarily serving the homeowners insurance market in Florida and select northeastern and southeastern states. The company maintains its website at www.hcigroup.com and operates through five reportable segments: Insurance Operations, Exzeo, Reciprocal Exchange Operations, Real Estate, and Corporate and Other.
The Insurance Operations segment represents the core business, conducted through two active subsidiaries: Homeowners Choice Property & Casualty Insurance Company, Inc. and TypTap Insurance Company. These entities provide homeowners property and casualty insurance products, with Florida serving as the primary market. The company has grown substantially through organic expansion and strategic policy assumptions, including participation in legislatively mandated take-out programs designed to transition policies from Citizens Property Insurance Corporation to private insurers.
Exzeo Group, Inc., a majority-owned subsidiary in which HCI retained approximately 82.5% ownership following its November 2025 initial public offering, provides turnkey insurance technology and operations solutions through a proprietary platform of purpose-built software and data analytics applications. The Exzeo Platform includes systems such as SAMS, Harmony, ClaimColony, and AtlasViewer, designed to support core operational functions including quoting, underwriting, policy administration, and claims management for property and casualty insurance carriers.
The Reciprocal Exchange Operations segment manages consolidated reciprocal insurance exchanges owned by policyholders, including Condo Owners Reciprocal Exchange, which commenced operations in February 2024, and Tailrow Insurance Exchange, which began operations in February 2025. These exchanges provide commercial residential multiple peril and fire and homeowners multiple peril insurance respectively.
The Real Estate segment operates commercial properties including two marinas, three retail shopping centers, two corporate office parks, and undeveloped land held for future development. The company also maintains office facilities in Tampa and Ocala, Florida totaling approximately 146,654 square feet for operational use.
As of December 31, 2025, HCI Group employed 594 full-time employees and 12 employees through a professional employer organization, with the majority based in Florida. The company utilizes Exzeo's technology platform to drive operational efficiency, underwriting discipline, and competitive advantage across its insurance operations.
