What HNI CORP does
In the company’s own words
HNI Corporation (NYSE: HNI) is a manufacturer of workplace furnishings and residential building products serving commercial, government, education, and healthcare customers across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company maintains its corporate headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa and operates through two reportable segments: Workplace Furnishings and Residential Building Products.
The Workplace Furnishings segment, which generated 76 percent of fiscal 2025 net sales of $2.8 billion, designs and manufactures panel-based and freestanding furniture systems, seating, benching, tables, architectural products, storage, and collaborative items. The company operates as a market leader in this space through a portfolio of widely recognized brands including HON, Kimball, Allsteel, Steelcase, Coalesse, National, and Smith System, among others. Products are distributed through independent dealers, company-owned dealers, national office product distributors, and direct sales channels to end-user customers and government entities.
The Residential Building Products segment, contributing 24 percent of fiscal 2025 sales, manufactures and markets hearth products including gas, wood, electric, and pellet-fueled fireplaces, inserts, stoves, and outdoor fire products under brands such as Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Majestic, Vermont Castlings, and Harman. These products are sold through independent dealers, distributors, and company-owned retail outlets. The company holds the position of North America's largest manufacturer and marketer of hearth products.
In December 2025, HNI acquired Steelcase Inc., a global design and furniture company, for $1.9 billion in cash and stock consideration, significantly expanding its workplace furnishings capabilities and geographic reach. As of January 3, 2026, the corporation employed approximately 19,500 persons across manufacturing and distribution operations in the United States, Mexico, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, China, India, and Malaysia. The company's strategy emphasizes customer-first mindset, effortless buying experiences, and operational excellence through lean manufacturing principles.
