What IMPINJ INC does

In the company’s own words

Impinj, Inc. (NASDAQ: PI) operates as a leading provider of wireless connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things, with its platform enabling item-to-cloud connectivity across enterprise operations worldwide. The company's website is www.impinj.com.

The company designs and sells a comprehensive platform built around RAIN technology, an ultra-high frequency RFID standard that the company pioneered and continues to advance. Impinj's platform spans endpoint ICs (miniature radios-on-a-chip that attach to items for wireless identification), reader ICs embedded in devices, finished readers and gateways for autonomous reading solutions, tag production systems, and software and cloud services. The company has enabled connectivity for more than 150 billion items to date and serves customers across retail, supply chain and logistics, food service, aviation, automotive, healthcare, banking, datacenters, and industrial manufacturing sectors.

Endpoint IC sales constitute the majority of revenue, representing a recurring revenue stream as items require replacement tags. The company's systems business, including readers, gateways, and software solutions, generates higher-margin revenue but represents a smaller portion of total sales. Impinj derives revenue primarily through a partner ecosystem comprising hundreds of original equipment manufacturers, tag service bureaus, systems integrators, value-added resellers, and solution providers rather than through direct end-user sales.

The company maintains a significant competitive advantage through its integrated platform incorporating proprietary Gen2X extensions to the RAIN standard, which enhance performance, security, and cost-effectiveness. Impinj holds a leading patent portfolio with 285 issued and allowed U.S. patents and serves as a recognized industry thought leader, having spearheaded RAIN standard development and cofounded the RAIN Alliance, which comprises over 150 member companies.

As of December 31, 2025, Impinj employed 457 people across the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The company outsources most manufacturing to third parties including TSMC for wafer production and Plexus for reader and gateway assembly, while operating its own tag production systems facility in Finland through its Voyantic subsidiary acquired in 2023.
