What Independent Bank Corporation does

In the company’s own words

Independent Bank Corporation (NASDAQ: IBCP) operates as a bank holding company registered with the Federal Reserve, owning all outstanding stock of Independent Bank, a Michigan-chartered member of the Federal Reserve System with FDIC-insured deposits. The company website is www.IndependentBank.com.

Independent Bank traces its origins to First National Bank in Ionia, founded in 1864, and has grown through both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions, most recently acquiring Traverse City State Bank in April 2018. The bank serves rural and suburban communities across Lower Michigan through a main office in Grand Rapids and a network of 56 branches, one drive-thru facility, and five Michigan-based loan production offices, plus one loan production facility in Ohio.

The bank provides comprehensive commercial banking services to individuals and businesses, including checking and savings accounts, commercial lending, consumer financing, mortgage lending, and safe deposit box services. As of December 31, 2025, the bank maintained total loans of $4.276 billion and total deposits of $4.762 billion. The company employs 735 full-time employees and 91 part-time employees.

Revenue sources are diversified across interest and fees on loans (75.7% of revenue), other interest income (9.8%), and non-interest income (14.5%). The bank competes with commercial banks, savings banks, credit unions, mortgage banking companies, fintech companies, securities brokerages, insurance companies, and money market mutual funds. While many competitors possess substantially greater resources, Independent Bank differentiates through service quality, convenience, and competitive pricing in its regional markets.

The company offers investment services through a third-party agreement with Cetera Investment Services LLC and provides title insurance services. The bank does not offer trust services. Independent Bank maintains strong capital ratios exceeding regulatory well-capitalized standards and operates under extensive federal and state regulation, including oversight by the Federal Reserve, FDIC, and Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services. The company continues to adapt to evolving regulatory requirements while managing credit risk, particularly within its commercial real estate portfolio, which represents approximately 24.7% of total loans.
