What Ivanhoe Electric Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Ivanhoe Electric Inc. (NYSE American: IE) is a technology-driven United States minerals exploration and development company focused on copper and other critical metals essential to electric transmission, generation, manufacturing, infrastructure development, and national security. The company operates wholly owned assets in the United States and exploration joint ventures and alliances in Saudi Arabia, Chile, and the United States.
The company's primary business involves mineral exploration and development, leveraging its proprietary Typhoon™ geophysical surveying system and advanced data analytics capabilities through its subsidiary Computational Geosciences Inc., which the company owns at 94.3%. These technologies accelerate and de-risk mineral exploration processes in the search for critical metal deposits. Ivanhoe Electric believes the United States remains significantly underexplored with substantial potential for major new discoveries of critical metals.
The company's flagship project is the Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, a development stage property encompassing approximately 26.0 square kilometers on private land with associated water rights. In June 2025, Ivanhoe Electric completed a Preliminary Feasibility Study projecting the Santa Cruz project could produce 1.4 million tonnes of copper cathode over a 23-year mine life, with an estimated after-tax net present value of $1.4 billion at an 8% discount rate and an internal rate of return of 20% at a base case copper price of $4.25 per pound.
Beyond Santa Cruz, the company maintains a portfolio of exploration projects including the Tintic Project in Utah, the Hog Heaven Copper-Silver-Gold Project in Montana, and the Gleeson Copper-Gold Project in Arizona. Internationally, Ivanhoe Electric operates through a 50/50 joint venture with Saudi Arabian Mining Company exploring approximately 50,000 square kilometers in Saudi Arabia, a collaboration with Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile to explore copper deposits in northern Chile, and interests in projects in Colombia, Ivory Coast, and Peru.
The company also owns a 90.0% interest in VRB Energy Inc., which develops grid-scale energy storage systems utilizing vanadium redox flow batteries for renewable power integration. Ivanhoe Electric maintains an exploration alliance with BHP Group Limited to search for critical minerals across Areas of Interest in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
