Kemper Corporation (NYSE: KMPR) is a specialized insurance holding company operating through two primary business segments: Specialty Property & Casualty Insurance and Life Insurance. The company maintains approximately $12.5 billion in assets and serves over 4.5 million policies through a network of more than 24,100 agents and brokers, supported by approximately 7,400 employees across the United States.
The Specialty Property & Casualty Insurance segment, based in Chicago and operating under the Kemper Auto brand across 22 states, generates 89 percent of consolidated insurance premiums. This segment focuses on personal automobile insurance for consumers with non-standard driving records or claims history, as well as commercial automobile coverage targeting contractors, delivery services, and sales operations. California, Florida, and Texas represent 90 percent of segment premiums. The segment also established Kemper Reciprocal, an Illinois-domiciled reciprocal insurance exchange, which wrote $50.3 million in net premiums during 2025.
The Life Insurance segment, primarily based in St. Louis and operating in 26 states plus the District of Columbia, accounts for approximately 9 percent of consolidated insurance premiums. This segment employs nearly 2,200 career agents who provide individual life insurance, term insurance, and guaranteed issue products to customers seeking basic family protection. Average policy premiums approximate $30 monthly with average face values of $6,513. The segment also distributes fire and contents protection and personal general liability coverage through its agent network. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida represent 63 percent of segment premiums.
The company maintains property and casualty insurance reserves of $2.94 billion and life insurance reserves of $3.29 billion as of December 31, 2025. Kemper manages catastrophe exposure through geographic diversification, reinsurance arrangements, and coverage limitations.
