What KINGSTONE COMPANIES, INC. does
In the company’s own words
Kingstone Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: KINS) is a regional property and casualty insurance company headquartered in New York with operations accessible at www.kingstoneinsurance.com. The company operates through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kingstone Insurance Company (KICO), which has been writing insurance business in New York since 1886.
KICO writes personal lines and commercial auto insurance exclusively through retail and wholesale agents and brokers, with approximately 700 producers distributing its products. The company is licensed to operate in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, though it has strategically reduced its footprint in several northeastern states beginning in 2022. For the year ended December 31, 2025, KICO generated gross written premiums of $277.8 million, with 98.0 percent derived from New York policies. Personal lines insurance, consisting of homeowners, dwelling fire, cooperative and condominium, renters, and personal umbrella policies, represented 94.7 percent of gross written premiums. Livery physical damage insurance for for-hire vehicles accounted for 5.2 percent of premiums.
The company also operates Cosi Agency, Inc., a multi-state licensed general agency that accesses alternative distribution channels by receiving commission revenue from KICO for policies placed with other carriers.
Kingstone's competitive strengths include its long operational history and established relationships with producers, sophisticated pricing and underwriting practices leveraging local market expertise, effective utilization of reinsurance to manage catastrophic exposure, and scalable low-cost operations supported by a remote workforce model. The company maintains a Demotech A (Excellent) financial strength rating, which qualifies its policies for banks and finance companies.
The company pursues a five-year growth plan targeting $500 million in direct written premiums through organic growth in its core New York market and measured geographic expansion. Recent strategic initiatives include expansion into California on an excess and surplus lines basis beginning in the second quarter of 2026, with planned entry into Connecticut later in 2026 and two additional states in 2027. In 2025, the company withdrew from writing new business in New Jersey and benefited from market opportunities as competitors exited the New York personal lines market.
