Koppers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: KPP) is a leading integrated global provider of treated wood products, wood preservation chemicals, and carbon compounds serving diverse end-markets including railroad, utility, residential lumber, agriculture, aluminum, steel, rubber, and construction industries. The company operates through a comprehensive global manufacturing and distribution network with facilities across North America, South America, Australasia, and Europe.
The company operates three principal business segments. The Railroad and Utility Products and Services segment supplies pressure-treated railroad ties to Class I railroads in North America and treated utility poles to utility markets in the United States and Australia, along with rail joint bars and inspection services. The Performance Chemicals segment manufactures copper-based wood preservatives including MicroPro and FlamePro brands, serving lumber treating companies and end-use markets globally. The Carbon Materials and Chemicals segment produces creosote, carbon pitch, and naphthalene through coal tar distillation, with applications in wood treatment, aluminum production, and concrete manufacturing.
Koppers operates 18 wood treating plants and one rail joint bar manufacturing facility, along with three coal tar distillation facilities and two carbon materials terminals. The company employs approximately 1,859 people across its operations. The business benefits from vertical integration, with the CMC segment supplying creosote to the RUPS segment and the PC segment supplying wood preservatives internally, creating competitive advantages through supply security and logistics efficiency.
The company holds leading market positions, including being the largest supplier of railroad crossties to Class I railroads in North America, the second largest producer of utility poles in the United States, the largest global supplier of creosote to the North American railroad industry, and the global leader in wood preservation chemicals and wood treatment technologies. Koppers maintains important trademarks including the Koppers name acquired in 1988, along with MicroPro, FlamePro, Protim, and Solignum brands. The company's circular economy approach emphasizes using by-products and renewable resources, with approximately 30 million pounds of scrap copper purchased annually for processing into copper compounds.
