What KRONOS WORLDWIDE INC does
In the company’s own words
Kronos Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: KRO) is a leading global producer and marketer of titanium dioxide pigments, or TiO2, a base industrial product used across a wide range of applications. The company operates through its website at kronosww.com and maintains a presence in approximately 100 countries, serving roughly 3,000 customers with the majority of sales concentrated in Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific region.
TiO2 is a white inorganic pigment prized for its exceptional durability and ability to impart whiteness, brightness, and opacity to products. The pigment is a critical component in everyday applications including coatings, plastics, and paper, as well as specialty products such as inks, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Kronos believes TiO2 has no effective substitutes due to its superior hiding power and physical properties compared to alternative white pigments.
The company produces TiO2 using both chloride and sulfate manufacturing processes. Chloride process production, which represents approximately 83 percent of the company's expected 2026 manufacturing capacity, is preferred for coatings and plastics applications. Sulfate process production comprises the remaining 17 percent and is preferred for selected paper products, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Kronos operates six TiO2 production facilities located in Leverkusen and Nordenham, Germany; Langerbrugge, Belgium; Fredrikstad, Norway; Varennes, Canada; and Lake Charles, Louisiana. The company also operates an ilmenite mine in Norway with an estimated 50-year reserve life, providing feedstock for sulfate process plants and generating sales to third parties.
Core TiO2 pigments represented approximately 90 percent of net sales in 2025, with complementary businesses including ilmenite mining, iron-based chemicals marketed through the Ecochem division, and specialty chemicals comprising the remaining 10 percent. Geographic sales distribution in 2025 reflected Europe at 45 percent, North America at 40 percent, Asia Pacific at 8 percent, and Rest of World at 7 percent. End-use markets included coatings at 59 percent, plastics at 30 percent, paper at 8 percent, and other applications at 3 percent.
As of December 31, 2025, Kronos employed approximately 2,263 people across its global operations. The company holds approximately 7 percent of worldwide TiO2 sales volume and ranks among the top four TiO2 producers globally. Kronos maintains the KRONOS trademark portfolio and offers over 30 different TiO2 pigment grades designed for specific end-use applications.
