The company markets its offerings under the Lincoln Financial brand name and maintains principal executive offices in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

The company operates through four primary business segments. The Annuities segment offers variable annuities, fixed annuities, and registered index-linked annuities with various guarantee features including guaranteed death benefits, guaranteed withdrawal benefits, and guaranteed income benefits. The Life Insurance segment provides term insurance, universal life insurance, indexed universal life insurance, variable universal life insurance, and linked-benefit products combining life insurance with long-term care coverage. The Group Protection segment delivers group non-medical insurance products including short- and long-term disability insurance, group term life, accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, dental, and vision products to employers of all sizes. The Retirement Plan Services segment serves the defined contribution retirement plan marketplace through group variable annuities, fixed annuities, and mutual fund-based programs with recordkeeping and compliance services.

Lincoln Financial Distributors serves as the company's wholesale distributor, providing access to financial intermediaries including brokers, planners, agents, financial advisers, and third-party administrators. The company previously operated Lincoln Financial Network as a retail distributor until its sale in May 2024. Distribution channels vary by segment, with annuities and life insurance products distributed through financial intermediaries and retirement plan services distributed through internal wholesale teams and unaffiliated advisers.

The company employs approximately 450 internal and external wholesalers across its distribution network. Lincoln National Corporation maintains a comprehensive reinsurance program designed to protect insurance subsidiaries against severity of losses, with a policy to retain no more than twenty million dollars on individual insured lives.
