What Lumentum does
In the company’s own words
Lumentum Holdings Inc. is a global leader in optical and photonic technologies headquartered in San Jose, California. The company operates at www.lumentum.com and serves as an industry-leading provider of optical and photonic products for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, telecommunications, consumer, and industrial applications.
The company operates as a single integrated enterprise with revenue disaggregated into two primary product categories: Components and Systems. Components include semiconductor laser chips, laser sub-assemblies, line subsystems, and wavelength management systems supplied to customers who integrate them into larger solutions. Systems represent complete, stand-alone solutions such as optical modules, optical circuit switches, and industrial lasers including short-pulse solid-state lasers and kilowatt-class fiber lasers.
Lumentum's product portfolio enables high-capacity optical links for data center interconnect applications, communications service provider networks, and enterprise infrastructure including storage area networks and local and wide area networks. Industrial laser products serve precision material processing across semiconductor fabrication, electric vehicle battery production, metal cutting and welding, and advanced manufacturing. Consumer applications include laser light sources for 3D sensing cameras in smartphones and computing devices.
The company was incorporated as a subsidiary of JDS Uniphase Corporation in February 2015 and spun off as an independent publicly traded company in August 2015. Since then, Lumentum has completed strategic acquisitions including Oclaro in 2018, NeoPhotonics Corporation and IPG Photonics' telecom transmission product lines in 2022, and Cloud Light Technology Limited in 2023. These acquisitions expanded the product portfolio, broadened revenue mix, and strengthened market positioning.
As of June 27, 2026, Lumentum employed approximately 13,757 full-time employees across manufacturing, research and development, and sales and administrative functions. The company maintains significant manufacturing facilities in North America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, with contract manufacturing partners primarily located in Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. During fiscal year 2026, international operations represented 79.2 percent of net revenue based on customer shipment locations.
