What Lyft, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Lyft, Inc. (NASDAQ: LYFT) operates a global mobility platform that connects riders with drivers through its proprietary technology infrastructure. The company's website is located at www.lyft.com.
The company's core business centers on a ridesharing marketplace that generates substantially all of its revenue through service fees and commissions collected from drivers. Beyond ridesharing, Lyft generates revenue from licensing and data access agreements, bike and scooter rentals, advertising services through its Lyft Ads platform, vehicle rentals through its Express Drive program, and Lyft Business offerings for organizational clients.
Lyft's transportation network encompasses multiple service categories including standard rideshare, taxis, private hire vehicles, executive chauffeur services, car sharing, and shared bikes and scooters. The company significantly expanded its geographic footprint in 2025 through two major acquisitions. In July 2025, Lyft acquired Intelligent Apps GmbH (Freenow), a leading European multimodal app with taxi services, entering nine new countries and more than 180 cities. In October 2025, the company acquired TheBookingRoomGroup Limited (TBR Global Chauffeuring), a global luxury chauffeuring company operating in thousands of cities worldwide. As a result of these acquisitions and organic expansion, Lyft now operates in thousands of cities across six continents.
The company employs 3,913 full-time employees worldwide as of December 31, 2025. Lyft's technology platform leverages machine learning and data science to predict demand, optimize driver supply, and match riders with drivers efficiently. The company maintains commercial partnerships with Amazon Web Services for cloud infrastructure and operates its own car rental subsidiary, Flexdrive Services, LLC.
Lyft faces intense competition primarily from Uber in ridesharing markets, Bolt and Uber in European taxi and private hire services, and companies like Lime and Bird in bike and scooter sharing. The company also competes with emerging autonomous vehicle developers including Waymo, Zoox, and others developing transportation-as-a-service offerings.
The company's brand positioning emphasizes safety, affordability, reliability, and convenience for both riders and drivers, supported by continuous investments in platform technology, customer support, and community safety initiatives.
