What MARZETTI CO does
In the company’s own words
The Marzetti Company, formerly known as Lancaster Colony Corporation until June 2025, operates as a manufacturer and marketer of specialty food products serving both retail and foodservice channels across the United States. The company maintains its principal operations through 13 food manufacturing plants strategically located throughout the country, supported by a workforce of approximately 3,500 employees, of which 18 percent are represented under collective bargaining contracts.
The company's business is organized into two reportable segments. The Retail segment, representing 32 percent of net sales, produces frozen breads under the New York Bakery and Sister Schubert's brands, refrigerated dressings and dips marketed under Marzetti, shelf-stable dressings and sauces sold under Marzetti, Cardini's, and Girard's brands, and Japanese barbecue sauces under the Bachan's brand. The Retail segment also manufactures products under exclusive license agreements with major national brands including Chick-fil-A, Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, Texas Roadhouse, and Subway. The Foodservice segment, representing 68 percent of net sales, primarily supplies custom-formulated sauces, salad dressings, frozen breads, and yeast rolls to national chain restaurant accounts and distributors.
The company's portfolio includes numerous owned and licensed trademarks representing significant intellectual property assets essential to competitive positioning. Major customers include Walmart, representing 18 percent of consolidated net sales, and Chick-fil-A, representing 30 percent of consolidated net sales through combined Retail and Foodservice channels. The top five customers in each segment represent substantial portions of respective segment revenues.
In May 2026, the company completed its largest acquisition in history, purchasing Bachan's, Inc. for approximately 400 million dollars, funded through cash on hand and borrowings under its credit facility. This acquisition expanded the company's branded portfolio in the Japanese condiment category. The company's strategic growth plan focuses on accelerating base business growth, simplifying supply chains to enhance margins, and expanding through retail licensing programs and complementary acquisitions.
