What MFA FINANCIAL, INC. does
In the company’s own words
MFA Financial, Inc. (NYSE: MFA) operates as a specialty finance company focused on investing in and financing residential mortgage assets. The company maintains its website at www.mfafinancial.com and conducts business as an internally-managed real estate investment trust that has been operating since its incorporation in Maryland in 1997.
The company's investment portfolio centers on three primary asset categories: residential whole loans, residential mortgage securities, and real estate owned properties. Residential whole loans comprise approximately 68 percent of total assets and include non-qualified mortgage loans, business purpose loans for real estate investors, transitional rehabilitation loans, single-family rental loans, and legacy non-performing or re-performing loans. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Lima One Capital, the company originates and services business purpose loans nationwide, having funded more than 7.3 billion dollars in loans since the full acquisition in July 2021. The residential mortgage securities portfolio includes Agency mortgage-backed securities guaranteed by government-sponsored enterprises, non-Agency mortgage-backed securities, and credit risk transfer securities. As of December 31, 2025, residential mortgage securities represented approximately 27 percent of total assets.
MFA Financial finances its investment portfolio primarily through loan securitizations, term warehouse facilities, and repurchase agreements. The company employs 307 people as of year-end 2025, including 250 employees within the Lima One subsidiary. During 2025, the company acquired approximately 2.7 billion dollars in residential whole loans and opportunistically added 2.1 billion dollars in Agency mortgage-backed securities.
The company maintains qualification as a REIT for federal income tax purposes and operates through wholly-owned subsidiaries to preserve an exemption from registration under the Investment Company Act of 1940. This structure ensures that less than 40 percent of adjusted total assets consist of investment securities as defined by the Investment Company Act. MFA Financial competes with financial institutions, specialty finance companies, insurance companies, institutional investors, hedge funds, and other mortgage REITs in acquiring and holding residential mortgage assets.
