What NMI Holdings, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
NMI Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: NMIH) is a mortgage insurance provider that protects lenders and investors from default-related losses on residential mortgage loans. The company operates through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, National Mortgage Insurance Corporation (NMIC) and National Mortgage Reinsurance Inc. One (Re One), both domiciled in Wisconsin and regulated by the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. NMIC is approved as a mortgage insurance provider by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored enterprises that dominate the secondary mortgage market, and is licensed to write mortgage insurance coverage in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The company's primary business is providing mortgage insurance on high loan-to-value residential mortgages, which facilitates secondary market sales and allows lenders to expand their mortgage origination capacity. As of December 31, 2025, NMI had issued master policies with 2,193 customers, including national and regional mortgage banks, money center banks, credit unions, community banks, builder-owned mortgage lenders, and non-bank lenders. The company maintained $221.4 billion in primary insurance in force and $59.3 billion in primary risk in force, with new insurance written of $48.9 billion during 2025.
NMI operates through two primary customer segments: National Accounts representing the largest mortgage originators and Regional Accounts representing local and regional lenders. The company employs 225 full-time and part-time employees and generates revenues exclusively from United States operations. Beyond primary mortgage insurance, NMI provides outsourced loan review services through its subsidiary National Mortgage Insurance Services, Inc., which reviews loan documentation and assesses compliance with underwriting guidelines.
The company utilizes a proprietary risk-based pricing platform called Rate GPS® to establish individualized premium rates based on borrower credit, loan characteristics, and market conditions. NMI manages its capital and risk through third-party reinsurance arrangements, including quota share reinsurance, excess-of-loss reinsurance, and insurance-linked notes. The company's common stock trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol NMIH. Additional information is available at the company's website.
